Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia to start a podshow soon ?

PodshowDaniel Primark seems to have the scoop (at least I could not find information anywhere else): Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers and Sequoia have both participated (the former most likely having led, since they seem to have two board seats) in the Series A round of PodShow.com, the podcast distribution network founded by Adam Curry and Ron Bloom. Here is an excerpt of Daniel’s newsletter:

There is little that gets Valley girls and boys as hot and bothered as when an Internet company gets funded by both Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. So it's worth noting that the iconic venture shops have participated in an $8.85 million Series A round for PodShow Inc., according to a regulatory filing. For an added bonus, both John Doerr and Ray Lane have taken board seats, joining both Jerry Newman of Bear Stearns and omnipresent angel investor Ram Shriram (Google, Plaxo, Zazzle, etc.), who is representing shareholder Harris MyCFO Inc.

AdamCurryHaving Doerr and Shiram (and Sequoia) involved in Podshow is certainly worth noting giving their personal, and combined, track record. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first deal KP does in social media (I am not couting Friendster as a social media play, even after they started offering blogs) – not being involved in blogging platforms, search engines, aggregators, etc (though one could argue that their stake in Google and their board seat might have limited their investment ability in the space). They are also the first VC to announce a funding in the podcasting space.

Odeo’s Ev Willians mentioned that he had closed a round of financing in this podcast interview on VentureVoice (which is an excellent progam by the way) but nothing has been announced yet. In an IM conversation, Om actually pointed me to Ev's post regarding his own funding: Odeo receives funding from Charles River (plus: Kapor, Kraus, O'Reilly, Kopelman, Conway...). No mention of terms or amount, but quite a prestigious group (13 angel investors - phew).

Big question now: Will Adam get them to do a Daily Source Code to talk about their investment, etc. That’d be really cool.

Smaller question: if Sequoia is involved, why aren’t they on the board ? I am sure that this will get clarified in due course.

More:

  • Rob Greenlee from WebTalk fame did a great interview of Adam Curry on ITConversations, worth a listen.
  • Matt reports the same info over on SiliconBeat.
  • More links to come as more information is released
